Man vs. Food…Diner’s, Drive-ins and Dives…

Watching people make food…food channels…watching people eat food…it almost seems comical to me when I think about it.  But for me…these are a couple of my favorite shows.  It keeps me away from reality tv (which seems like the only thing on these days)…it keeps me from seeing the same news reports over and over…and I also love watching people who are passionate about their work (if you can call a tour of eating a job) in this case.

I almost feel sorry for Adam Richman of the Travel Channel’s Man vs. Food.  I said…almost.  I have watched this show since the first time that I saw the preview for it.  Trying to eat 13 pound pizzas…seven pound hamburgers…atomic hot wings…finest sausages in natural sausage casings…2 pound doughnuts (which my wife assures me that she could eat with no problem)…tray after tray of oysters…and last night being the 72 ounce steak (think The Great Outdoors and th ol’ 96’er) makes for some easy entertainment.  Trust me…I am not sitting there thinking that I could do this.  One of my favorites was the episode from Gino’s in Chicago…it was horrible sitting there watching him diving in to the Meaty Legend.  Does Gino’s deliver?

Now Guy Fieri of Diner’s, Drive-ins, and Dives takes on a whole new meaning of food watching…his take is not about quantity but quality.  Well…quality in the sense of going to dives where the food is awesome.  It is funny because my dad likes this show as well.  So when they were in Las Vegas they went to one of the diners that Guy had featured on his show.  Pretty cool…

I guess the ironic part about me watching both of these shows is that I am not a big eater.  I am actually a very picky eater.  But for me I just like the fact that they both are eating at places that we don’t see every day that are all over the country.  One of my friends has a bunch of these little places that are hidden gems…if you have never been to Bonge’s Tavern in Perkinsville you really need to go…
